about

I live and work on the unceded lands of the Gadigal People of the Eora Nation.

Artist Statement

Since graduation from my MFA in 2021 I have developed an experimental drawing practice that utilises performative drawing as a methodology to simultaneously observe and record a site while walking. My drawings are a kind of kinaesthetic seismograph, capturing not just what is seen, but what is sensed and felt, and the action of my body as I move through space.

I regard the practice of drawing while walking as an opportunity to document spaces that are significant. While recording what is seen and felt, I am exploring my own connections to the places where I walk, wandering through the visible landscape and the invisible landscape of memory. When the visible and invisible are combined, an atmosphere is created that is evident in my drawings.

I use a harness to hold my drawing board and materials so both hands are free to draw. I prefer to walk and draw at night to avoid unwanted attention. My walks are documented by a backward-facing camera that captures where I have been. These videos are drawings and are posted to YouTube.

Drawing while walking – rather than drawing while still – results in mark-making that is more automatic, less considered, or contrived. I hope to be startled by the types of marks I make while walking. The combination of drawings and video feed larger, more substantial works when I return to my studio. These larger works are ‘felt-landscapes’, maps of a site, and its associated sentiments. They are made on paper, canvas, or salvaged fabric.

Since graduation, I founded DRAW Space, an ARI located on Enmore Road in Newtown in Sydney’s Inner West together with seven other artists. DRAW Space provides a platform to make, see, and experience contemporary drawing. We work with a broad definition of what drawing is and encourage continued research and exploration of what it can be. As a new centre for contemporary drawing, we aim, through exhibitions, performances, workshops, artist talks and residencies, to engage more closely with the broader community, expand understanding of what drawing is and enhance the standing of drawing in an Australian and international art context. You can find out more on the DRAW Space website.
